Where to Play Basketball During the Winter Season

You're twenty three and in your athletic prime right? Unfortunately you are not Lebron twenty three, probably meaning that your face isn't gracing the TV screen that often. Maybe you're a college basketball player who took the extended stay package and has a nice warm gym to perfect your stroke. However, the majority of us are stuck with a winter time problem. The NBA is starting along with the NCAA, and our basketball fever is slowly becoming a product of the cold weather. So what do the out of high school, out of college kids do with the blacktop not really being an option? Here is a guide to making sure you don't lose a step during street ball off season.

You can sign up at a YMCA or a 24hour fitness. YMCA's the place to find some of the Bay Area's best pick up. From some of the best high school basketball players in your area to bone bruising 40 year old men, YMCA's host some tough competition. 24 Hour Fitness's are good places for active indoor runs. However the courts are sometimes very small and packed with 2- 5 team waits. Signing a contract with either one of these gyms can be relatively expensive but very much worth it since you are almost guaranteed to find basketball players to play with.

You can sign up for Fall/Winter Recreation Leagues. Connect with your local YMCA or Community Center to inquire about sign ups. Players can find access to league information through their city's park and recreation websites. From there find the main contact, that is responsible for the sign up process. Ask about the rules, regulations, competition level, price and schedule of the league; these will give you a better indication if the league is right for you.

Local churches have runs all the time, especially in San Francisco. Just make sure to understand the requirements. Sometimes you have to be part of the church or have to pay a small fee. Whatever you do be well behaved...you're in church.

Recreation Centers are great for competitive open runs. At some rec or community centers you can play at anytime for free. Others you may have to pay a small amount. And others may have set times for open runs. Make sure you check with your local recreation center to understand their hours and guidelines. Also check out our courts page to find a recreation center near you.

Your final option is to suck it up and play outside. The blacktop is open all year round!

Today's Chicago Bulls Hope to Charge Into More NBA Championships

If you live on Earth, then you probably have heard of the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan. You also probably know that the Bulls twice won back-to-back-to-back NBA Championships (1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998). However, fewer people are aware about the pre-Jordan history of the Bulls, or about the Jordan-era seasons in which the team failed to win NBA titles.

How was the Chicago Bulls born? The Bulls' first season was in 1966-1967. The first owner of the Bulls, Dick Klein, named the team in honor of the prolific livestock business in the city. This was actually the third NBA team to play in Chicago, following the Chicago Stags (1946-1950), and the Chicago Packers/Zephyrs (1961-1963).

The Bulls played an outstanding first season. Chicago won their first franchise game 104-97, over the St. Louis Hawks. Amazingly, they completed their first season with a 33-48 record, and earned a spot in the playoffs. Ironically, the Bulls lost their first series to the St. Louis Hawks, 3-0. However, their first season's record was the best record for a first year NBA team.

The Bulls struggled for several years, to advance in the playoffs. They went 0-6 in first playoff series, during their first six years. However, during the 1973-1974 season, the Bulls won their first playoff series, against the Detroit Pistons. However, the Milwaukee Bucks then swept them in the Western Conference Finals.

From the 1974-1975 season until the 1983-1984 season, the Bulls only made the playoffs three times (1975, 1977, 1981). The deepest they got in the playoffs was in 1975. During that year, the Bulls earned another spot in the Western Conference Finals. However, they lost the series to the Golden State Warriors, after taking a 3-2 lead in the series.

The Jordan-era Bulls that most people are familiar with began in 1984. Following the 1983-1984 season, the Bulls picked Jordan as the 3rd overall NBA selection in the draft. He would replace Reggie Theus, who the Bulls had traded during the previous season.

Many people forget, or are not aware, that Jordan played several years for the Bulls, before winning his first championship. Here are the results of the Jordan-era Bulls seasons, prior to winning their first NBA championship:

1984-1985: 38-44 record; lost in first round to the Milwaukee Bucks
1985-1986: 30-52 record; lost in first round to the Boston Celtics (note: Jordan scored 63 points in Game 2, to set a postseason record in the NBA)
1986-1987: 40-42 record; lost in first round to the Boston Celtics
1987-1988: 50-32 record; lost in second round to the Detroit Pistons
1988-1989: 47-35; lost in Eastern Conference Finals to the Detroit Pistons
1989-1990: 57-25; lost in Eastern Conference Finals to the Detroit Pistons

However, the Bulls won their first NBA championship in the 1990-1991 season, by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers. The rest, as they say, is history.

The Chicago Bulls made history during the Jordan era. Cheer them to more Bullish success, with an array of Chicago Bulls merchandise that is available!

Chicago Bulls Early Season Review

I have watched most of the Bulls games this season. The highlight for the Bulls is clearly the play of Derrick Rose. Derrick has tremendous speed and can drive to the hoop on most players. Derrick is 6'-3" so he can get above most guards as he has a 40" vertical jump. In watching Derrick he has an extra gear when he needs it.

Derrick also can handle the ball equally with both hands. I expect Derrick will show more improvement as his confidence grows. I have great expectations for Derrick and he can become an All-Star and a great player for many seasons for the Bulls.

Derrick does need to improve his defense and he has had too many turnovers. Derrick also needs to improve his outside shot. I am very happy and pleased with his play at the start of the season. Derrick is only 20 and only played one year at Memphis.

I watched the second half of the recent game against Cleveland. The Bulls did not play badly but they could not stop LeBron in the fourth quarter. LeBron scored 41 points and the Bulls could just not stop him. Ben had another good scoring game with 29 points.

The biggest problem for the Bulls was stated clearly by Kenny Smith on TNT. The Bulls do not have a low post option so they cannot throw the ball down in the low post. This lack of a double option prevents a two man game which most teams can play. The Bulls do not have someone to attack the hoop and then pass the ball back outside for an open shot.

The Bulls are not consistent with their offense. They still take too many jump shots and fail to take the ball to the basket and get to the foul line. Derrick is our only player who can draw the defense to him when he drives to the basket. The Bulls are still one of the worst shooting team in the league. The Bulls miss far too many open shots.

The Bulls have now lost Captain Kirk for up to 3 months which will hurt the team. Kirk is not consistent every night but he can run the offense and hit some outside shots. Our best shooter is clearly Ben Gordon but he is undersized and his defense is not very good.

The Bulls gave Luol Deng a new contract and his play has been inconsistent. I believe that Luol has a lot of skill and he needs to be more aggressive. He can shot the outside jumper and he can drive to the basket. We need more from Luol on the offensive end.

I am happy with the play of Drew Gooden as he plays hard and does a good job on the board. Drew can score but he does not have a good low post game. I am very disappointed with the poor shooting of Tyrus Thomas. He can play good defense and rebound and block some shots but he is inconsistent.

As for the center position we cannot expect to be successful playing an undersized Drew Gooden. We are not getting much out of Joakim Noah and he has no shot. He can play defense and rebound but he is only a decent backup in my opinion. As for Aaron Gray he is just too slow in all aspects of the game.

I am hoping that Larry Hughes can give us some scoring when he returns from his injury. Thabo should go back to the bench as his shooting is very poor. I am happy with the play of Noch off the bench. He can score when he is hot and hit the 3 point shot. He also plays hard and does a good job on defense.

I do not expect the Bulls to make the playoffs this year. I am expecting them to win something in the range of 35 games. The Bulls should be in the draft lottery again next year and we need to draft a post player. I am disappointed that the Bulls have not made a trade.

The Bulls should have made a trade during the off season. It may be difficult to make a deal now but we should still try. The failure to make the Gasol trade last year was a mistake. We know that Jerry rejected the deal because of having to pay a luxury tax. I feel that Jerry has always been more interested in money than in winning and spending some money.

I also place blame on Paxson as most of his picks are a disappointment. The Bulls need to make some changes next year if they want to compete and get back to the playoffs. The upcoming West Coast road trip is likely to be a disaster for the Bulls. I hope I am wrong but I am afraid this will be a long season for Bulls fans.

Basketball Skills - How to Beat Taller and Stronger Players in 1-on-1, 2-on-2, and 3-on-3 Games

This is article will take your basketball IQ to a new level. I have perfected this material over the past 25 years playing high school basketball, college basketball, city-league basketball, 3-on-3 tournaments, and pick-up games all over the country.

The most memorable implementation of these strategies was in the finals of the 3-on-3 tournament sponsored by the NBA at the 1995 NBA All Star Game held in Phoenix. In that final game we faced a starting line-up of 6'4", 6'8", and 6'10"-- all former Division 1 players. In contrast I am 6'2" and my teammates where 6'1" and 6'5". This stuff works.

Lets get started.

First, and most importantly, in order to defeat a taller and stronger player you must develop an excellent 15-20ft. jump-shot. Pick-up games are usually started at the top of the key--so make sure you are a deadly shooter around the top of the circle--on in to the free-throw line. Also make sure you can take a couple of dribbles to your right and to your left, square-up and nail the 15-20ft jumper.

Secondly, learn how to shoot lay-ups equally well with both hands. This is easy to learn but unbelievably important. Otherwise a smart defender will force you to your weaker side. If you are a deadly jump-shooter and can shoot lay-ups ambidextrously you are virtually unstoppable (think Steve Nash). When a defender crowds you, go around them for a lay-up. If the defender plays off you, make them pay with your jumper.

Thirdly, you absolutely must understand how to execute the pick-and-roll. The pick-in-roll will be your main strategy in 2-on-2 and 3-on-3 games. It is virtually unstoppable if those executing it can hit their mid-range jump-shots and make their lay-ups.

Lastly, you have to play defense. When you are playing bigger and stronger players they will usually try to back you down into the paint, turn and try to shoot over you.

This is how you defend it.

Hold your position and battle them as hard as you can as they try to back you into the paint. When they turn to shoot, use your quickness to strip the ball before it gets above their shoulders.

To sum it up, this is how you beat taller and stronger players.

1.) Become an excellent midrange jump-shooter (15-20ft.)

2.) Shoot lay-ups equally well with both hands

3.) Learn how to execute the pick-and-roll

4.) Develop hand quickness and foot speed for defense (stripping the ball).

Good luck and have fun.

Michael Jordan Cards, Nice Hobby Investment - You Can't Go Wrong! By Delio Jimenez

Michael Jordan was part of the "Big Three", that kept NBA basketball going. I can't remember them all, but I want to say it was Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and possibly Charles Barkley. I could be wrong, but I believe that was the talk back then in the 1990's.

For me as a collector, and I was a huge L.A. Lakers fan, clearly it was Michael Jordan. Fleer Basketball cards, are the corner stone of any Michael Jordan collection, especially in the last 7 years where Star Company basketball cards became non-gradable by most of the legitimate card companies. Counterfeiting was the main reason for the lack of Star Company basketball cards being graded, although I have seen a resurgence of PSA graded Star Company basketball cards of late.

If you wanted to stay on the safe side, I recommend the Fleer Basketball cards and Michael Jordan, the 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card has become the formidable one, putting away 10 of these for a rainy day would be nice, if you can afford graded even better, don't try going lower than an PSA or BGS 8.

If you can find the Michael Jordan Star Company basketball cards graded then by all means, have at them.

Just expect to pay a pretty penny. These cards do not come cheap, there are also a few different versions of the 1986 Star Company Michael Jordan, basketball cards.

Try making a nice run of Michael Jordan Fleer cards, starting with the rookie and then move on up, there also some nice odd ball cards that should add nice conversational pieces, one of my favorites is the 1996 Topps Embossed Basketball Michael Jordan card, sporting the jersey #18. Nice piece, one to have graded for sure. These have many flaws, so to have a BGS 9.5, or PSA 10 would be noteworthy. The recession might be the right time to start collecting some of the autographed cards that he has signed, I would even try selling some less desirable cards to obtain these. Most of these, depending on the limited amount go for $600.00, those that are not numbered go for about $180.00 to about $250.00

Most of the truly legitimate autographed cards of Michael Jordan come via the Upper Deck company and they are exclusive, there are quite a few limited to the number of his jersey #23. These too are pretty expensive. The range about $800.00

Michael Jordan should be the corner stone of any sports card collection, unless you do not want the greatest basketball player to have ever played the game in your collection! I can still see his finger in the air almost guiding the ball to the bottom of the net in that NBA Championship series, Incredible!

Wait! Before you sell those sports cards for next to nothing, purchase a Beckett magazine of your favorite sports collectible and earn the profit you deserve.

How to Do a Slam Dunk - Basketball Skills

By Lewis Waller

So, you want to learn how to do a slam dunk, do you? Become the star basketball player on your team? Get more airtime than Jordan? More hang time? Win the Slam Dunk Contest at the NBA All-Star Game your rookie year?

Well, alright. All of this is possible, but not without being consistent in your training and working hard on, as well as off, the court. It is probably more important to consistently work hard off the court.

To learn how to do a slam dunk is easy, really. At least it is easy to learn what you need to do in order to do the slam dunk successfully. I mean, doing a slam dunk just means jumping up to the basket, stuffing the ball into the net, hanging for your fans a while (so that they can all take pictures with their cell phone cameras, of course), then dropping to the ground. The hardest part of all that is getting some air.

If you are one of those countless people out there who are thinking and hoping that there are some kind of special exercises or moves that will suddenly make you into a slam dunkin' maniac, guess again. The only thing that is going to turn you into a slam dunkin' maniac, is proper exercise, time, and a huge, heapin' helpin' of three major ingredients - the secret formula for all-star slam dunking.

Blood. Sweat. And Tears.

Giving you the lowdown on which exercises work best to help you in developing your slam dunking style is easy for me to do. The other piece of the puzzle can only come from you. Only you can motivate you enough to follow through with what I am about to share with you. But I promise you this: stick with this program, follow through with it, and the next time Air Jordan is sailing toward the basket, he will have to look UP and see you sailing past. Can the old guy still grab air time? Who knows, but you get the idea.

The key components to perfect hang time are running faster and jumping higher. Therefore, your goal of how to do a slam dunk lies in learning to do both of these things better, stronger and faster than anyone else. To increase speed and height, there are certain exercises you will need to learn to do, that will get your legs to carry you faster and your leg muscles to get you airborne.

The first question on your mind should be this. Do the exercises that I will be doing help me run faster or jump higher or both? Both skills are joined at the hip - literally. The muscles you will be using to run faster are almost the same muscles that you will be using to leap higher. So these exercises will help you in both areas. Here is something to think about. Ever see a runner who can't jump worth a hill of beans? How about someone who is good at the high jump who is slower than growing grass? I think I've made my point.

So, start there. Exercises that help you learn how to run faster and jump higher will help you learn how to do a slam dunk.
